Hay fever is caused by an over-reaction from your own body’s immune system when confronted with allergens such as grass, pollen, animal dander, dust and fungal spores. The classic hay fever signs and symptoms include:

  • itchy eyes & throat
  • runny nose
  • sneezing
  • sinus congestion
  • headaches
  • irritability

How acupuncture and Chinese medicine views hay fever

Traditional Chinese medicine views hay fever as being caused by wind. Wind enters the throat and mouth, disrupting energy and causing congestion and itching. Some people suffer easily when exposed to wind and others not at all, so although wind is seen as the external cause of hay fever, there’s also an underlying weakness in the energy system predisposing the person to allergic attacks.

There is a quote from a 2000 year old classic Chinese medicine text “The Golden Emperors Classic of Medicine” that states “If evil assembles somewhere, energy must be vacuous”. If the defensive energy is strong, no damaging energy will enter the body.

To treat hay fever with acupuncture and Chinese medicine often means using acupuncture points and herbs to decongest the sinuses and remove wind and then building the immune system to prevent further attacks.

How can Chinese medicine help?

Drawing on over 5 thousand years of experience in treating hay fever, Chinese medicine uses acupuncture needles, cupping, massage, herbal medicine and dietary advice with great success. Most patients experience relief after 20 minutes of acupuncture. Used in conjunction with herbal preparations, many patients achieve long lasting results.
Directly after an acupuncture session with Paul you may notice:

How to control hay fever at home

Any allergic reaction is often caused by an imbalance in the body’s energy system from incorrect diet, stress and lack of exercise. Making lifestyle changes will enable you to control the signs and symptoms of hayfever and make your acupuncture and herbal medicine treatments more effective.

  • Increase vegetables. Follow a bland diet of rice and vegetables with small amounts of meat. Increase fruit and vegetables, chew well and increase water intake (room temperature).
  • Avoid foods considered damp and phlegm forming in Chinese medicine including: wheat, dairy, sugar, chocolate, alcohol, coffee, and cold foods directly from the fridge.
  • Relax. Once per day enter a deeply relaxed state. Use a guided meditation CD, join a meditation class, take a walk, practice yoga, tai chi or other activities that makes you feel relaxed.
  • Self-massage. Try these four simple self-massage methods specifically designed to relieve hay fever symptoms.

1. Find the point in the webbing between your thumb and index finger. Press 100 times.

2. Press just to the side of each nostril 100 times.

3. Massage along your hairline at the back of your neck.

4. Grasp one shoulder with the opposite hand 3-5 times, and then lightly pound with a loose fist 30-50 times. Repeat other side.

A well known Australian acupuncturist John McDonald conducted a trial on the Gold Coast as part of a Griffith University study on acupuncture hay fever treatment. The Courier Mail article describes the acupuncture hay fever study and the experience of one of the participants. The acupuncture hay fever trial showed the effectiveness of acupuncture hay fever treatment and how it works from a medical point of view.
